Picture Frame Dilemma

I have crafted a frame for one of my daughter’s paintings. She painted this especially for me, so I want to provide a respectable frame for display.

It’s a simple frame I created from inexpensive cove molding and 3/4″ X 3/4″ trim from good-old Home Depot.

My dilemma is how to finish the frame. I have three options. Which one do you believe will accent the painting to it’s fullest potential?

  1. Paint the frame to match the white Gesso of the painting?
  2. Paint the frame a color to compliment the colors in the painting?
  3. Stain the frame (Dark or Light)?

Any input is appreciated. I’ve never been good with matching frames to the work.
